What’s your favorite Bible verse and why does it speak to you?

Corinthians 5:7 “For we walk by faith, not by sight”.   It reminds me to trust God even when I cannot see what He is doing or understand what he has planned for me.  We can trust in God and His word and not our feelings, but the Holy Spirit.  God is working behind the scenes.

How did you know God was calling you to be a teacher?

When I started substituting in between jobs, I helped a student understand something she was having trouble with.  She hugged me and said, “I wished you were my teacher”!  I knew that was what I was supposed to do right then.  I already had a college degree in Sociology and a Paralegal degree, but no matter what I did, I wasn’t happy.  When I prayed for God to direct my life is when I got this substitute job.  The rest is history!

How has your faith shaped the way you teach?

Just as my favorite verse says, it reminds me to believe in my students and encourage them to have faith in themselves and encourage them to trust in God, even when it is hard.  I not only want to teach them academically, but also spiritually and influence them to be kind, compassionate, honest, and serve one another.

What’s your favorite Bible story, and why?

I love the story of Ruth.  It shows how pain and grief can lead to healing with the love of a friend, through grace and kindness. I have some amazing friends who have helped me with some rough bumps in the road, in my life. Ruth chose to stay by Naomi’s side even when she could have walked away.  She showed to kind of loyal and selfless love I want to always have for my friends and family.  It reminds me that God is always working on us, in the good and bad times in our lives.  Ruth’s story encourages me to keep walking in faith, to love and serve others, and to trust God that he has a purpose for every part of my life.

How did you know God was calling you to be a teacher?

Both of my parents were educators. As I watched them I swore that I would never go down that difficult path. So much work and it took so much of their hearts. I was going to be a veterinarian. As I was figuring out how to apply to ATM I was called up and hired to teach math at a tiny school in central Texas. And God has continued opening doors into different schools as He sees fit to move me. His plans are always bigger and better than ours.

What’s a worship song you can’t help but sing along to?

There is always some song playing in my head! One of my favorite worship songs spoke to me while fighting cancer and it still makes me break out at least humming whenever I hear it, and that is Chris Tomlin’s “I Will Rise”. What a glorious day that will be! No sorrow and no pain!

What’s one truth from Scripture you hope your students carry with them long after they leave your class?

There are many scriptures on work ethic in the classroom that students will find applicable to all areas of life. Two I like are Colossians 3:23 “ What ever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not human masters. “ and Ecclesiastes 9: 10 that says ,” Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might.” God tells us to always do our best whenever we are given a task. That extends to every area of life!

What’s one piece of encouragement from Scripture you’d give to CCA parents this year?

Remember, young people are navigating a very confusing time in their lives and so much is changing for them. 1 Peter 3:8 says “ Finally, all of you, be like – minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble.” Students need clear boundaries and guidelines – and patience and love and compassion! We were all there once. Do not get frustrated! As Proverbs 22:6 says “ Train a child up in the way he should go; and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” God has placed them in a school where they are being trained in HIs word!
